It's between the Audi Q7, Mercedes-Benz GL450, or a Chevy suburban. I think the GL is the best. They audi is due for a redesign. And the suburban doesn't have the same appeal to me as the GL. I don't know. What does Oppo think?

No to the Suburban compared to the other two. Unless the added size is needed. If you've never been in one the vehicle is huge. I prefer Audi in general so that'd be my choice.

I'm guessing the Burb is way cheaper so I'd vote for that.

I've always liked the GL but it just feels like a trophy wife's car. I'd say Suburban because it's fuckin big and mean, also, 'Murica.

wont do it. I have a strict "you wont take my advice anyway so I'm not going to give it to you" car assist policy (not referring to YOU not taking my advice, but the person asking)

I like the Suburban because cheap maintenance, towing, and more room inside than most NY apartments

Can I say "none of the above"? Tanks, the lot of them.

Suburban - I'm betting it's cheaper than both the Merc and Audi. Plus, I think it looks better and maintenance on the Merc will probably be expensive.

True. But I would want them to upgrade to the GMC level because bigger engine.

Well, optioned up the suburban can get quite expensive.

More then the Audi or Benz?

if he's looking at the Q7 and GL450 he is likely opting for the Suburban LTZ, which costs the same.

Possibly. The Q7 starts at 47k, and I think the GL450 starts at 65k.

Burb starts at 47

The Audi is the obvious choice if you like driving. It's the most car-like and feels like a big A6. A near-loaded one is merely 65K. Make sure to spec out the sexy espresso interior. The Merc is great, but pricey. With the premium pack, leather, lighting pack and premium paint, it retails at almost 76K.
I'd recommend the Infiniti QX80 AWD (formerly QX56). It's massive, special-feeling and you can pick up an almost loaded model for GL money. There's more space than the other two and the interior is amazing. Plus, second-row occupants get a FRICKIN CONSOLE.

Wow! The suburban got expensive! Optioned up, they'll all probably be pretty close.

Suburban. Because Murica.
If size is not needed stick to the Tahoe, which is smaller. Or go with a Yukon for lux.

Except the Benz starts at 20k more!

Yes. My neighbor has a Q7, without the espresso interior. :( Although, anoth friends dad does have a Q7 and it does have the espresso interior. They ruled out the QX80 because it's ugly.

Right, but I figure they'll all end up around 70k optioned.

Suburban because its the biggest, best looking (IMO), and will definitely be the most reliable.
I'd get a Yukon XL though, because it looks even better.

Q7, especially if TDI.

Suburban should not be in the conversation unless there's going to be a lot of heavy towing with lots of passengers. It's really a different category of vehicle.
Personally, I'd try to swing a Land Cruiser over any of these.

Is he buying new or used? And what are his top priorities (unless it is size and cheapness, the 'burban is out)?
![]() 08/19/2014 at 13:40 |

1) It's a different type of vehicle.
2)Audi- $50k. Merc- $65k. Land Cruiser- $80k.

My guess is, if he's looking at a tank, it's because he wants a tank.

Q7 TDI, because diesel.

Not arguing, you are correct.
What I was thinking: he was saying that he expected all versions to be optioned to 70k. Since there's a general disconnect in capability of the vehicle (see Suburban being mixed in) that opened the aperture. If I were in that position I'd try to swing the extra 10k to get real overland capability which would be more useful to most people than the towing the burb gives.

Audi Q7 - brakes are 2k per axle labor and parts; gas pig unless its the Diesel; inner door panels sometimes break off inside the door and require the door to be taken apart for the loose foam to be removed - AWESOME in winter - not so awesome for towing.
Merc - Heavy as F; Gas pig; Brakes are same as the Audi but also have a bad tendency to squeek when brand new and/or just replaced; Build quality is the same as the audi but i prefer audis vehicle due to being very much lighter. Good in winter but nothing on quattro; meh on towing
Chevy - hell no. burn dollar bills while driving - burn 100's when starting the truck. good for towing w package. Meh in winter,.
**i worked for both Audi and Merc if ppl are wondering where I get my infos**

Love my 2010 Audi Q7 TDI. The thing is rated with the factory tow hitch at 6617 lbs on the diesel. 404 ft-lbs of torque is awesome in the mountains of NC. Cheaper than a fully loaded MB, but if you want full size seating for real adults in the third row, go with the 'Burb. From the Audi owners manual, the third row seats in the Q7 is not designed for folks taller than 5' 7".

Interesting; I didn't know that. Never sat back there, haha.
